Hit and Run Victim Still Recovering from Injuries

A 23-year old Corpus Christi woman is still recovering in a hospital after being hit by a car. Police are still looking for the driver of the vehicle that hit her.

Amanda Arriola said she is lucky to be alive. She will have to spend the next several weeks in the hospital recovering from her injuries, but she is confident she will pull through. However, she said she cannot understand how someone could do such a thing. Most of all, she wants to know why they didn't stop.

"That's all I want to know. Why wouldn't they, didn't they, help me? Why didn't they stop?" Arriola said. "I know I'm not their friend. In my heart I would help anybody. I guess there are just some people out there who don't care."

Arriola said she will probably spend the next six weeks here at Christus Spohn Memorial recovering from the crash. She went through surgery for a broken pelvis on Wednesday, and she also has two broken bones in her legs, and will probably have to learn to walk again.

The 23-year old said she was doing some laundry at a friend's house on New Year's Eve, getting ready to head to work. Just after 1 a.m., she was crossing the road at Baldwin and Fig when she was struck by a car.

The driver kept going, leaving her in the middle of the road clinging to life. Luckily her brothers saw it happen and called 911.

"I looked to my left and right, and I remember taking one or two steps, and I woke up and my hands were bloody," Arriola said. "I had this necklace and the impact broke it, and they found the cross and that made me feel better because that's my mom's necklace."

According to a witness, the person who hit Arriola was driving a 2001 or 2002 blue Cadillac Deville. If you have any information that can help police track this person down, call Crime Stoppers at 361-888-8477.

Arriola said she can't wait to get back on her feet and get back to her job at a local McDonalds. She does not have health insurance, so if you would like to help with any of the medical expenses, contact her mother Grace at 361-558-7870.
