Corpus Christi (CC Hooks) - The Hooks rode a barrage of two-base hits and a strong tandem pitching performance to a 6-0 win and a series sweep of the Tulsa Drillers in front of 4,716 Tuesday night at Whataburger Field.
Corpus Christi batters hit six doubles, including three by right-fielder Domingo Santana, which tied a Hooks record for doubles in a game, last done by Koby Clemens in May 2010. Jiovanni Mier didn't double, but he contributed three hits including a home run and two runs batted in.
The Hooks (5-1) scored two runs in the first inning off Tulsa starter Dan Houston. The frame started with three consecutive singles by Austin Wates, Mier and George Springer, resulting in Corpus Christi's first run. With two outs Santana hit his first double of the game to plate Springer and give the Hooks a 2-0 lead.
Corpus Christi added two runs in the third. With one out Mier hit his first home run of the season and the following four Hooks' hitters reached base. Springer doubled, moved to second on a Michael Burgess base hit and scored on Santana's second double of night to extend Corpus Christi's lead to four.
Meanwhile, Hooks' starting pitcher Bobby Doran (1-0) was mowing down Drillers. The Texas Tech product allowed a two-out single in the first inning and then proceeded to retire the following 13 hitters he faced, finishing with four strikeouts.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Santana doubled once more to chase Houston (0-2) from the game. After Tulsa (1-5) reliever Tim Sexton retired the first batter he faced, Enrique Hernandez doubled home Santana and the score was 5-0 Corpus Christi.
The second half of the Hooks' pitching tandem, Nick Tropeano, looked nearly untouchable in four innings of work, giving up five hits, but striking out six. Pitching more than three innings with the lead, Tropeano earned the save.
Corpus Christi added one more run in the sixth inning on a Mier sacrifice fly to push the lead to its final margin.
The Hooks have an off-day Wednesday, before they play six games away from Whataburger Field. They take on the Springfield Cardinals Thursday through Saturday before traveling to Tulsa on Sunday. The club returns to the friendly confines Thursday, April 18 to host the Frisco RoughRiders.
