CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Jonathan Meyer and Enrique Hernandez stroked consecutive one-out doubles in the eighth inning to lift Corpus Christi past Tulsa 3-2 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 6,233.
Their heroics made a loser of Mike Solbach (0-1), who came on for the eighth and induced a fly to right off the bat of Domingo Santana. Meyer then ripped a double to left field and Hernandez followed suit with his third hit of the afternoon for the decisive RBI.
Matt Heidenreich (1-0) fanned three in three innings of scoreless relief. Jason Stoffel retired Tulsa in order in the ninth for his second save.
The Hooks (3-1) moved up 1-0 in the first as George Springer took an unconventional journey around the bases. Springer crushed a two-out double to the wall in dead center and then traversed the final 180 feet on a pair of Tim Gustafson wild pitches.
Tulsa (1-3) punched back with two runs against Ruben Alaniz. After a lead-off single and steal of second, Kent Matthes scored when Dustin Garneau doubled off the left-center field fence. Joey Wong produced a two-out hit to plate Garneau.
Gustafson escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the third. Carlos Perez' double and a swinging bunt hit from Ben Orloff sandwiched a walk to Austin Wates. Gustafson fanned Springer and Michael Burgess before retiring Santana on a fly to right.
Drillers reliever Parker Frazier got Meyer to pop to short with the bases full two innings later.
Alaniz, lifted for Jorge De Leon after 3 2/3 innings and 74 pitches, was responsible for five hits, a walk and a strikeout.
Gustafson went just as deep, walking one and striking out four. His exit came after Hernandez knotted the game with a solo shot to left.
Frazier contributed 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings for the visitors.
