CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Arnold Leon allowed one run over six innings and Brett Hunter fanned four in two shutout frames as Midland beat Corpus Christi 3-1 Wednesday at Whataburger Field before 4,234.
Leon (3-3) recorded five strikeouts and did not walk a man. He threw 94 pitches (61 strikes) and worked around seven hits.
Frank Gailey pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save as the RockHounds (28-30) snapped a four-game losing streak.
Midland fashioned a two-run strike against Nick Tropeano (1-4) in the second. Back-to-back singles from David Freitas and Beau Taylor paved the way for Dusty Coleman's RBI double. Chad Oberacker followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Hooks (36-22) squandered chances during the first and third. George Springer's lead-off double was wasted, as were consecutive no-out singles by Jiovanni Mier and Springer.
Tropeano retired 10 straight after Midland's two-run burst. The first man in Corpus Christi's piggyback tandem permitted four hits, walked one and struck out five. Fifty-two of his 80 pitches were strikes.
In the fifth, Jon Singleton's two-out double into the right-field corner plated Mier (lead-off single/stolen base) as Corpus Christi halved the lead.
That was short-lived, as Freitas' eighth home run - a booming two-out shot to left off Bobby Doran - restored the two-run advantage. Doran was clean from that point on, retiring the last 10 RockHounds.
Hooks third baseman Jonathan Meyer has hit in nine straight.
Ruben Alaniz (2-5) takes the ball for Corpus Christi Thursday at 7:05 against Sean Murphy (2-2). The first 1,500 fans receive a Hooks Piggy Bank from 1st Community Bank.
