There is some damage on our local beaches that came as a direct result of Hurricane Ike. Specifically, Mustang Island where the storm surge left behind tons of debris, decimated the sand dunes, and caused major beach erosion.

Access road 2 on Mustang Island is closed off due to a huge amount of debris left over from Hurricane Ike. The Parks and Recreation Department says the city will be spending the next 90 days surveying the damage that stretches all the way from Zahn Road to the Port Aransas city limits. Whitecap is back open however, access road 2 will remain closed possibly through the weekend until all of the debris is hauled off.  Officials also warn drivers there is still soft sand in some areas on the beach.
