Innocent Bystander Hit During Shooting in Mathis

An innocent bystander was injured during a shooting in Mathis late Thursday night, and now has the community on edge.

Kiii 3 News has learned that there were multiple shootings and retaliation efforts.

Police said the 21-year old woman was in the front passenger seat of a Buick when the shooting occurred on North Atascosa Street. She was grazed by bullets in the arm and rib cage, but is reportedly okay.

The woman was taken by HALO Flight to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital.

"This is a major concern. Any time people start shooting in the town, other folks can get hurt, such as this incident," said Detective Byron Smith of the Mathis Police Department. "Possibly people that were not intended to get hurt, get hurt, and that's always the danger of something like this occurring."

Another shooting reportedly occurred Thursday night, possibly in the same location.

Two people have been arrested and charged. 21-year old Jesse Gutierrez and 30-year old Jose Flores, Jr., were both charged with deadly conduct and evading arrest. Their bond was set at $105,000 each.

Sources said that Flores has a connection with the young woman who was shot, who was identified as Olga Morales, and that he is possibly a boyfriend or ex-boyfriend.
