Intoxicated Woman Arrested While Pushing Child in Stroller on Leeward Drive

Police were called out to the 15000 block of Leeward Drive at around 4:30 p.m. Monday after getting reports of an intoxicated woman walking in the middle of the road, pushing a stroller with a child in it.

When officers arrived, they say they found 41-year old Charlotte Earwood staggering while walking north on the side of Leeward Drive. She was pushing a small pink stroller. Police say that, as they approached Earwood, she lost her balance and fell, dropping two 16-ounce Lone Star beer cans.

Police contacted her and say they immediately noticed the smell of alcohol, but she refused to let go of the stroller. A 20-month old child inside was crying, and officers had to pull the woman's hand off the stroller handle.

Four witnesses told police they saw the woman staggering while walking and drinking, and they were concerned for the safety of the child.

Emergency Medical Service responders from the Corpus Christi Fire Department were called out to check on the child, who was identified as Earwood's grandchild. Earwood was arrested and charged with child neglect, a state jail felony, and public intoxication.

The child was released to its grandfather when he arrived at the scene.
