CORPUS CHRISTI (Islanders Athletics) - The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22) final behind a triple-double by Logen Bourque on Thursday night. It was also the 20th win of the year for the team, a first in school history.
The Islanders (20-10, 11-6 Southland) started out fast, winning the first two sets before a temporary setback in the third against Lamar (10-21, 2-15 Southland), but came on to take a close final set for the win.
Bourque led the way on the night, picking up 10 kills, 39 assists and 13 digs to record the first triple-double for an Islander since 2005. Shannon Hullum had a team-high 13 kills, while Ivy Baresh added 11 in the match. Micah Nolan led the team with 24 digs as Baresh also reached double digits with 10 digs on the night.
The first set stared out with the Islanders gaining control early on as kills by Hullum and Baresh gave the team the lead, and four straight by Brooke Alverson made it a 7-2 lead with Lamar calling the first timeout of the match.
After the break, the Islanders extended the lead to six at 11-5 on a Hullum kill. The visiting Cardinals closed the gap to three at 12-9, but a pair of kills by Baresh, a Hullum service ace and three straight kills by Bourque made it a seven-point lead at 18-11. The lead was down to just two at 22-20 following another Cardinals rally, but Texas A&M – Corpus Christi would score three of the final four points to make it a 25-21 final.
Set two saw Lamar go up 3-1, but six consecutive points by the Islanders turned the deficit into a 7-3 lead. Hullum started the rally off with back-to-back kills to even it up at 3-3. Nolan followed with a service ace, and then another Hullum kill helped extend it to 7-3 and force a Lady Cardinals timeout.
Lamar scored the first point out of the break, but the Islanders added three straight on a kill by Alverson, a service ace by Hullum and finally a kill by Hullum to make it 10-4. The closest the Lady Cardinals would get after that was five points at 13-8, but Texas A&M – Corpus Christi continued to outpace the visitors. With the lead at 21-15, kills by Alverson and Brianna Brink were followed by an Alverson service ace to make it 24-15, and a kill by Tyger Holt finished it off at 25-15 for the 2-0 match lead.
The third set saw the teams battle to a 6-6 tie, but Lamar put together a run to make it a 12-7 lead. It grew to as many as eight at 18-10, but the Islanders would rally to make it close late. Kills by Hullum, Bourque and Brink helped make it 23-19 as the Lady Cardinals called a timeout. A kill by Courtney Hall helped make it 24-23, but a service error ended the set in favor of the visiting team to make it a 2-1 Islanders lead in the match.
The final set featured nine ties and four lead changes as the Islanders and Lamar battled throughout. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi trailed 10-9 when the team scored three consecutive points on kills by Bourque and Baresh followed by a Bourque service ace to make it a 12-10 lead. Baresh extended it to 14-11 with a kill that forced a Lady Cardinals timeout.
After the break, Lamar worked towards a tie at 17-17, but an Alverson kill and service ace put the Islanders on top for good at 19-17. The Lady Cardinals made it a one-point set on five different occasions, with the final coming at 22-21, but Texas A&M – Corpus Christi scored three of the final four points to take a 25-22 final and a 3-1 match win.
