CORPUS CHRISTI (Islanders Athletics) - The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-15) sweep over Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference match at the Dugan Wellness Center on Saturday afternoon. The win was the 18th of the season for the team, a new program record.
The Islanders (18-9, 10-5 Southland) earned their second straight win after returning home, picking up a season sweep over the Lady Lions (10-17, 5-12 Southland) and a 2-0 week to get back on track in league play.
Shannon Hullum picked up 10 kills in the match, the only player from either team with double-digit kills.Ivy Baresh finished the day with nine, while the next closest wasBrianna Brink at seven. In all, nine different players recorded kills on a day when the team played 15 different players as everyone that dressed out go into the match.
Logen Bourque finished with a match-high 23 assists, and Micah Nolan had 17 digs, followed by Baresh with 10. Tyger Holt had a big day on the block, earning one block solo and five block assists, while Brooke Alverson had three block solos and one block assist at the net.
The Islanders started out quick in the first set, taking a 3-0 lead on a pair of kills from Hullum and a Courtney Hall block solo to force a Lady Lions timeout. After the early break, Bourque picked up back-to-back service aces and Hall put away a kill on an over pass to make it a 6-0 score. The team extended the lead to as many as eight before another 6-0 run was started with a block solo by Alverson and a Brink kill on an over pass.
The start of the run once again forced a SELA timeout with the score 15-5 in favor of Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. After the stoppage in play, kills by Brink and Alverson made it an 18-5 lead. The Lady Lions scored six points late, but it was not nearly enough as the Islanders finished a 25-11 set for the 1-0 match lead.
The second set saw the Islanders take the Lady Lions' best shot and rally back for the 2-0 lead. SELA score the first three points and held the advantage until a kill by Baresh and a block solo by Alverson turned the deficit into a 7-6 lead. The visiting team responded with three straight points for a 9-7 lead. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi scored three-of-four to even it at 10-10, but the Lady Lions struck back to regain a 15-11 lead.
The Islanders came back with five consecutive points to make it a 16-15 lead as SELA called its first timeout. After the break, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi added to its lead, scoring seven-of-nine points to make it a 24-17 lead and set point. After a Lady Lions point, Alverson completed the comeback with a kill for a 25-18 final and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi dominated from the start and finished off the match with a 25-15 final. A kill by Hullum and a pair of block assists by Tyger Holt alongside Brink and Hullum made it a 4-0 score before the first Lady Lions point. After the one point, the team scored seven straight on a pair of block assists by Holt and Hullum, and kills by Hullum, Baresh and Holt to make it an 11-1 advantage.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi continued to pour it on, leading by as many as 14 following a Holt kill that made it 21-7 before a late SELA surge made the score a respectable 25-15 final to close out the match.
Next up for the Islanders will be back-to-back matches on the road, first taking on Prairie View A&M on Monday night in the final non-conference match of the season before a Tuesday encounter with the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks in the final Southland road match this year.
