Jim Wells County Sheriff's Deputies Honored

The Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department honored two of its deputies on Thursday, for going above and beyond the call of duty.

They said the heroism demonstrated by those deputies wound up saving the lives of five people. The story is filled with both sorrow and inspiration, as one woman did lose her life, but in doing so she helped give life to others.

At the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Office in Alice, Sheriff Oscar Lopez and his department honored deputies Javier Aguilera and Gilbert Saenz with letters of commendation and plaques. It was exactly one month ago that the deputies tried to save the life of 25-year old Anjelita Hinojosa Shelton.

Shelton had suffered a brain aneurism, and when the deputies found her unresponsive and not breathing, they began lifesaving measures. The deputies did not wait for EMS crews to arrive, and because they sprang into action and administered CPR, Shelton's organs were able to be preserved and donated.

Shelton's family, including her aunt, are grateful that the deputies did not wait to act.

"Because of you two, she lives. She continues to live, through y'all, by donating her organs," said Molly Arriaga, Anjelita's aunt. "So we're here to honor y'all, because y'all gave her life. She lives, and I want to tell everybody out there, donate. Be donors, because we still live through somebody else."

The Sheriff's Department said the deputies could have easily waited for emergency medical personnel to arrive, but instead they chose to go the extra mile, and went beyond what most deputies would have done in that situation.

Shelton had given birth just 10 days before she died. She leaves behind that newborn child and another five-year old child as well, and her husband. Sadly, Shelton had also just lost her mother to cancer a little over a month before she died, but her family does say she's living on through others because of the organs she donated.
