Jury Convicts Corpus Native in High-Profile Fraud Case

NEW MEXICO (Kiii News) - A jury has convicted two men, one of them a Corpus Christi native, in a high profile and controversial fraud case involving a former New Mexico Secretary of State.

Armando Gutierrez, who had nothing to say after the verdict, was convicted of stealing $2.5 million intended for voter education efforts in New Mexico. This was done while he acted as a consultant to the then Secretary of State.

"What we have here is an example of how, unfortunately, we have people in public positions taking advantage of those positions, and fleecing the public of those public funds," U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales said.

The jury deliberated just three hours before finding the men guilty.
