Leadership Conference Held at American Bank Center

Students from as far north as Austin and as far south as the Rio Grande Valley converged on the American Bank Center 1,400 strong, all here to hone their skills.

The students are all members of a school-based organization called Family Career and Community Leaders of America. On Friday, they chose the American Bank Center to display their talents and leadership skills.

They were there to impress their peers, but more importantly, to impress judges who were there to grade their work.

"This is an in-school organization that has family as a central focus, and we're tied to curriculums, so it's tied to middle schools and high schools for students that are involved in consumer family science classes," State Advisor Sharon Reddell Pierce said.

"There's so many different aspect of FCCLA," said Kathy Johnson, vice president of FCCLA. "Culinary arts, and then child development, taking care of kids. Like finance. Like other leadership organizations, so everybody can have a different career and can see all the different interests here."

The two-day event wraps up Saturday with an awards ceremony and the election of new officers for the coming year.
