Local Charter School Hosts Early Thanksgiving Lunch

Students at Dr. M.L. Garza-Gonzalez Charter School were treated to an early Thanksgiving with their parents and grandparents on Friday.

About 170 children and their parents or grandparents were treated to an early Thanksgiving lunch. Officials said they hold the event for two reasons, one being an opportunity to celebrate the holiday, and another to teach the kids the meaning of the day.

"We want to teach the culture of our nation," Superintendent Maria Luisa Garza said. "How it was formed, and what happened at the beginning of the landing of the people who came in to America through the 13 colonies, and how they celebrated this day."

School officials said it is important to get the parents and grandparents involved in their child's education, because it helps them do better in school.
