Local Drug Divert Court Celebrates Eight-Year Anniversary

A celebration was held Monday, marking the success of the local drug divert court program.

Divert court is designed for first-time drug offenders who are willing to take part in a year-long, court-supervised drug treatment program. The idea is to reduce the number of re-arrests and re-convictions.

"Number two, it alleviates the overcrowding at the jail, because these students, we call them students, they are participating," 214th District Court Judge Jose Longoria said. "They have some drawbacks, but once they complete the program, they get their felony charge completely dismissed so they have a new life, so to speak."

Since its inception eight years ago, the drug divert court has graduated 369 participants.
