Tonight's Millennia Report focuses on teen pregnancies.
And there's actually good news on that front.
Right now, there are fewer teen girls getting pregnant...than there were 10 years ago.
And that's not just across the nation but here in Nueces County as well.
Here are the figures.
NUECES COUNTY
1998- 450 teen births
2004- 318 teen births
Down by 2.2%

STATEWIDE
DOWN BY 1.4%
NUECES COUNTY\DOWN BY 2.2%

So what's behind the decline?
Doctor William Burgin the leading health authority in Nueces County says it's difficult to say exactly why teen pregnancy rates are down but he belives it's a credit to education.
"The adressing of this issue has been left with the school districts and Planned Parenthood and so it shows that they are making some end roads" says Dr. Burgin.
Also, according to two national surveys, fewer teenagers are having sex.
The national survey of Family Growth finds young girls reporting that they had ever had sexual intercourse declined from 53% to 50% in a 7 year period.
Also, abortions fell 24% percent over the last 10 years.

Oh but Ryan, this is a step in the right direction. Now if only there were more opportunities for college grads here.....then we would stay rather than go!

I really do wish that Channel 3 would scrutinize their news articles with a greater sense of seriousness before publishing them on the World Wide Web for all the world to see. Corpus is already viewed as the illiteracy capitol of Texas, so why contribute to that negative stigma by publishing news articles that only affirm it?
