A short illness, and then his unanticipated death.

Thursday, friends, family, and fellow officers of retired Corpus Christi Police Chief Pete Alvarez gathered to say goodbye. The Corpus Christi Cathedral held hundreds of mourners.

66 year old Alvarez was remembered as a man who didn't give up, and a determined family man, who will be truly missed. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

A procession from the uptown cathedral to the grave site followed. The former police chief died Saturday after battling a staph infection. He recently underwent triple bypass heart surgery.

Members of the patriot guard attended Thursday's service, honoring Corpus Christi's first Hispanic police chief.
