The great Texas seaweed debate now has scientists and government agencies, like the General Land Office, coming together to work up a game plan on what the best policy is when you're talking seaweed. They're all meeting for a three day conference at the Holiday Inn on Padre Island. It's focusing on how to handle the tons of Sargassum which washes up on our shores every year. Rob Conti is with the G-L-O,"If it's a success story bring it back and hopefully we'll have one of these next year and share it with everyone else maybe they could try it and eventually we can all get all the Texas coastal community can use the best possible solution for the different stretches of their beach."
Scientists here also explained the many benefits of seaweed. We're told that it's rich in nutrients and will act as a plant fertilizer when placed out in our dunes. It's also believed to have medicinal qualities and could be used as a fuel source for our cars and trucks. Another interesting piece of information concerning seaweed is that Christopher Columbus was the first person to document it's existence when he crossed the Atlantic during his voyage to the New World.

Seaweed is part of the beach. It doesn't need to be cleaned. If there is a fish kill, pick up the dead fish, but seaweed belongs on the beach. What's next? Another project to "beautify" the area by removing driftwood? Driftwood isn't trash, although I can see how people who don't understand the beach might not appreciate the difference.
