They lived to protect and serve and died in the line of duty.

Today fellow law enforcement brothers and sisters gathered to pay tribute.

The elaborate ceremony brought together members of the Corpus Christi police department, the Port of Corpus Christi Police Department and the Nueces County Sheriff's department.

They gathered at the Solomon Ortiz Center Pavilion to remember officers killed in the line of duty who gave their lives over the last century.

Harriet Skipper Nelson's great great grandfather, a Nueces County Sheriff, was killed in the line of duty back in 18-64.

"My grandmother told me that he was shot in the line of duty. That a competitor that run against him several times and had lost, just rode up to him on horseback and shot him with a pistol," said Nelson.
