It's that time again. Beware, it's bee season. A good reminder of that came his morning, as a CCISD grounds keeper was stung more than 50 times while mowing the grass around a district's athletic department building on Leopard. The building is no longer in use, and perhaps that made it a prime location for bees to set up shop.

The groundskeeper, Frank Corpus, says thankfully he didn't need to go to the hospital. He told Kiii News that he was mowing around the building when he felt a sting, then another, and another, and soon his face was covered with bees.

He did the right thing. He ran away from the scene, and didn't try to swat at the bees. Experts recommend wearing light colored clothing while doing yard work, because dark colors attract bees. And people should also know if they are allergic to bee stings. They should talk to their doctor about what to do in case of a sting.

Check your property before doing work in the yard. Humming engines from cars and mowers can irritate bees and cause them to swarm.

It is extremely unfortunate that Frank was stung. However we are losing our bees at an unprecended rate and these are probably native bees that pollinate wildflowers and other flowering plants. Please so not allow pesticides to be used to kill them. Contact both a swarm catcher and Sydney Cameron, an entomologist who is doing research on native bees. Europe is seeing losses of both native bees and, as a result, many wild flowers.
