So far, there have been no reported lawsuits against the Christus Spohn Health System because of Heparin overdosing of 17 prematurely born infants at Spohn South.  Kiii News spoke to one local attorney who is representing individuals suing institutions in the Rio Grande Valley alleging Heparin overdoses.  Attorney Bob Hilliard who is handling the Rio Grande cases says litigation involving this drug common and a lot has to do with labeling of the Heparin vials, "Where a labeling issue often results in a fatal mistake, they have two vials. Both are blue; the 10 thousand [milligram] is the same color as the 10 [milligram], and there has been mix-up[s] both in the Valley and around the country."

Hillard says 3 infants died in Indianapolis as a result of a Heparin mix up.

I do hope these babies have had ultra sounds of the brain to make sure there were no bleeds... which could cause live long issues. This seems to happen in NICU and with babies. Maybe the company should have very small viles only for babies made.

Heparin is usually prescribed in units (U), not milligrams (mg). At least do a little basic research on the drug.

I am wanting both the makers of the chemical and all hospitals to radically change their ways. The adult Heparin needs to be in a large Golden bottle and the childrens' diluted Heparin needs to be in something that ISN'T a Golden bottle. I'd love for the Law to come down VERY HARD on any/all hospitals that don't wake up and make serious changes right now. The next person who screws this up should absolutely do jail time. Two years absolute minimum; no probation.

This is very disturbing that corrections to distinguish between these two concentrations of Heparin after the mistakes that are known to have already taken place. Let us be proactive in the prevention of medication errors, learn from our mistakes. God Bless theese precious babies.

Any Med Malp Lawsuits in Texas will be for naught. Prop 12 gives doctor and hospitals almost complete immunity. What lawyer is going to do 5 to 10 yrs of appeals for at most, 1/3 of the $500,000 Cap? Or is they sue the Doctor it is only 1/3 of $250,000 Cap.
