Dolly Poised to Hit South Padre Island

Richard Longoria

South Padre Island - (CNN)

Hurricane Dolly is making it's way through the Gulf of Mexico and taking aim at Texas. Dolly is expected to make landfall around midday today.

Sean Callebs reports from South Padre Island, Texas.

IT'S BEEN A LONG, WET, WINDY NIGHT HERE IN THE SOUTHEASTERN PART OF TEXAS BUT
IT IS EXPECTED TO GET MUCH WORSE THROUGHOUT THE DAY. DOLLY IS EXPECTED TO BE A
SOAKER.

AFTER BOUNCING AROUND IN THE GULF... DOLLY COMPOSED HERSELF -- INTENT ON MAKING
A DATE WITH THE TEXAS- NORTHERN MEXICO BORDER.

PACKING STRONG WINDS....

BUT IT'S DOLLY'S HEAVY RAIN THAT HAS OFFICIALS CONCERNED.

"We always plan for the worst case scenario."

HUNDREDS OF NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS SET UP STAGING AREAS IN AUSTIN AND SAN
ANTONIO. IF LEVEES ALL ALONG THE RIO GRANDE GIVE WAY... FLOODING COULD BE
WIDESPREAD.

SOUTH PADRE --A BARRIER ISLAND OFF THE COAST OF BROWNSVILLE IS EXPOSED TO A
POSSIBLE SIX-FOOT STORM SURGE.

STILL.......

"For last two times hurricanes have even come through here... We went to San
Antonio and got way worse weather in San Antonio than there was here."

EVEN THOUGH MANY FLED...LEAVING THE ONE BRIDGE TO THE MAINLAND NEARLY VOID OF
TRAFFIC, JUST BEFORE THE HURRICANE HIT... SOME REFUSED THROW IN THE TOWEL.

"It's been a year since I had my last vacation and that was back in Galveston.
I enjoy the beach a lot....I was out there with my boogie board and I was
having the blast of my life."

---TAG---

MUCH TOO DANGEROUS TO GO OUT IN THE SURF ANYTIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE
WARNINGS ARE OUT...AND THIS STORM IS EXPECTED TO DUMP AS MUCH AS 15 INCHES OF
RAIN ON PARTS OF TEXAS.

STILL, THE MAYOR OF BROWNSVILLE HAS NOT ORDERED EVACUATIONS YET SAYING HE
EXPECTS HIS RESIDENTS WILL FAIR WELL. IN SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, I'M SEAN CALLEBS.
