Nueces County Jail officials say that an inmate at the jail attempted suicide by self strangulation. Nueces County Sheriff Jim Kaelin and his staff answered questions from the media this afternoon the incident.

47 year old Roberto Garcia was inside the Nueces County Jail awaiting trial on an alleged domestic dispute. Sheriff Kaelin says Garcia was on suicide watch. That means an inmate is supposed to be checked on every 15 minutes.

The investigation is in it's early stages, but preliminary information reveals an officer discovered Garcia unconscious in his cell at 9:10 this morning. That officer was to take Garcia to a psychological assessment. Public Affairs Officer for the Sheriff's Department, Stan Repka told Kiii News that an officer found Garcia behind a partition in his cell and sitting on the toilet.  Sheriff Kaelin says he's contacted the Texas Rangers and they will investigate.

Garcia is said to be in ICU and on a ventilator at Christus Spohn Memorial.

District attorney Carlos Valdez visited the cell where this attempted suicided took place. There's now a criminal and internal administrative investigations being conducted.
