A dog's world is significantly different from man's. A dog depends less on visual impressions than on its superior senses of hearing and smell.
Major Kathy Jordan is the Squadron Commander of the 341st Training Squadron at San Antonio's Lankland Air Force base.
A unit that raises some 300 Belgian malinois a year, and trains them to protect our military personal both here at home and overseas. The dogs work in all branches of the military including the Transportation Security Administration.
They are trained to find land mines to drugs to even explosives.
What looks like a simple game of follow the leader, 12 week old Viper is already learning valuable lessons of biting correctly and holding his subject. A game where the dog is always praised.
Training a military dog from start to finish ussually takes about 4 months, most dogs can work until they're about the age of 10 years old.
Not only do the dogs have to be trained, but their handlers go through a rigorous course as well. A 2 part, 11 week training course where they must learn patrol dog handling, and detector dog handling. Giving the handler complete control over his 4 legged friend. Such as when a suspect runs, and then gives up.
Tech Sargent Chris Roach knows upon completion of the program, this dog Rex, could soon be joining the hundreds of others currently working in Iraq and Afghanistan, sniffing out bombs, and protecting military bases, and other potential targets of terrorism.
