On Padre Island, a woman and her little dog were walking down a neighborhood street this afternoon when one of two pit bulls attacked. Our Michael Gibson spoke with Betty Ivers who'd just been released from the hospital emergency room after her battle with a pit bull. She says she now has eight stitches and a number of bite marks on her hands and arms.
We arrived shortly after the attack and found a policeman and an animal control officer on the scene along Yardarm which is off Whitecap. The animal control officer went and talked with Monica Mackrizz. She's the owner of the two pit bulls who got out of their yard. But only one, a year and a half old gray female, is the dog Ivers says actually attacked her and her year old Papillion named Zucchi. Zucchi underwent emergency surgery this afternoon and the dogs spleen had to be removed. Meanwhile the pit bull is under quarantine for ten days.
Ivers says when she saw the pit bulls she turned and began walking the other direction. But then one pit bull caught up to her and her dog and began the attack. She says she kicked and screamed until someone came and got the dogs back in their yard. Animal control says it will eventually issue a number of tickets to the dog's owner Monica Mackrizz. Ivers says she doesn't want the dogs back in her neighborhood. She feels that if they were able to get to her and her dog, they could do the same thing to one of the small children who live nearby.
