SANDIA--A big grass fire today threatened at least three homes in Jim Wells County near the small town of Sandia.

Firefighters report the blaze started around 11am near Highway 359, south of Lake Corpus Christi. They said it burned about 600 acres from the Nueces River up to County Road 361.

At one point, the fire came up to the property line of those three homes, but firefighters were able to put it out in town.

"The dry conditions didn't help us very much," said Henry Barajas, who is the Fire Chief for the Sandia Volunteer Fire Department. "Plus we had light wind that was building up and made it a lot more difficult to fight the fire. Also in this little area, it's a lot of sand and it's unable for our trucks to get down to that area to fight it so we had to get heavy equipment from the county."

There's no word yet on the cause of this blaze.
