Protesters shutdown parts of Leopard Street as they demanded action from city leaders.

The marchers are not happy about the Las Brisas power plant project and they let their feelings be known in a very public way today.

Our Bill Churchwell has more on their efforts to stop the project altogether or at to least force tighter pollution controls on the plant.

Plants like these are a hazard for employees as well. Employees are subject to the pollution on the spot on a daily basis carrying the effects right into their homes. Also, employees on the field are subject to physical hazards, such as climbing towers and machinery that is run in such tight spaces. Now, we have a choice of allowing alternative energy plants that make use of our wind, water, and Sun. These better kind of energy plants can create a lot more jobs and keep our city sparkling!

Plants like this are on their way out not just around the country but around the world. Don't get stuck with the last remnant of a dying dinosaur, Corpus - say no to Las Brisas and yes to clean energy.

Bring in the Las Brisas Power Plant but add some tighter environmental controls. Not so tight that we drive them somewhere else but tight enough to leave us a comfortable margin below the maximum pollution levels. This will attract many more businesses to the port and the surrounding communities.

The proposed power facility will not be constructed in San Antonio nor Houston. Corpus Christi is the only viable solution for a firm that's attempting to EVADE federal air quality standards and restrictions. Corpus Christi will not be able to attract substantial and new economic development through out the 21st century if air quality standards are near the brink or at non-attainment. Improve the geopolitical and regional competitiveness of the Coastal Bend through growth industries.

Where are the people who are supposed to represent The People in this city? Scared or enbarrased? Not everyone has been fooled with 80 permanent jobs, lower electricity. More people are beginning to read, ask questions and decide on their own that too many lives are going to be affected very badly and that our economy will suffer from a lack of tourism and massive move-outs from Corpus Christi. Powerful lobbyists don't live here; the elite have ranches, etc.to move to and escape the fallout.

Corpus Christi City Budget

Corpus Christi city revenues aren't keeping up with the budget. What's the city to do? Cut expenses, raise taxes?

  • Small cuts in services and small tax rate hikes.
  • Drastic cuts in city services, no tax increases.
  • Reduce city employee salaries and benefits
  • Reduce all city services including pay cuts, and raise taxes
