For South Texas students, Spring break 2009 is just a memory, but for a dozen or so students from Minnesota, Spring Break is a time to head to Corpus Christi to make one family's dream of home-ownership a reality.

Fourteen teenagers from St. Anthony Village High School, in a suburb of Minneapolis, are sweating under the South Texas sun in hopes of making one family's dream a reality.

They're all a part of the school's Key Club, an international service organization. This year's project, an alternative spring break, is helping build Habitat for Humanity homes in the Coastal Bend.

The house is currently in the beginning stages of construction.

By June, this three bedroom, two bath home will be the pride and joy of a single mother, Dina Barrera. After finding time to care for her young family, and work a full-time job, she's put in over 200-sweat equity hours.

This home on John Street, just a couple of blocks from the port of Corpus Christi, is Habitat's 36th house. It's a project they rely heavily on volunteers, to accomplish.

The students say it's a tough job, but completely worth it.

Corpus Christi City Budget

Corpus Christi city revenues aren't keeping up with the budget. What's the city to do? Cut expenses, raise taxes?

  • Small cuts in services and small tax rate hikes.
  • Drastic cuts in city services, no tax increases.
  • Reduce city employee salaries and benefits
  • Reduce all city services including pay cuts, and raise taxes
