The board of the Corpus Christi Independent School District chose a name for its newest school. Toward the end of the board meeting on Monday night, it was narrowed down to two names. And then there was one name: Gloria Hicks got the majority vote of the board. She's been a community volunteer and philanthropist.

It all boiled down to her and the late State District Judge Carl Lewis.

The new school will replace Central Park Elementary on McArdle Road. It will consolidate students from Central Park and Lexington Elementary.

Monday afternoon work crews were preparing the interior of the school for eventual demolition that can begin later this month.

The crowd on Monday night was supportive of the board's choice. Some comments were: "Gloria Hicks gives, and gives, and gives, and has been doing it for 40 years. And she's given, and given, and nobody knows, you know why? 'Cause she does it out of the kindness of her heart."

Gloria Hicks Elementary is set to open for the 2010-2011 school year.
