Dozens of people opposed to the planned Las Brisas Coal-Fired Power Plant gathered Tuesday to protest the project.

It's slated for some land on the north-side of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel and that's where members of the Sierra Club and several other organizations staged a demonstration Tuesday.

They're urging the Federal Environmental Protection Agency to impose a moratorium on any more air quality permits being issued by the state for plants like Las Brisas.

The demonstrators claim that air pollution from Las Brisas would pose a major health hazard.

Those behind Las Brisas have in the past, have said they meet or exceed air pollution standards set by the state and federal government, but a spokesperson was not available for comment Tuesday.

Just moved to the area and now if find out someone wants to build a waste incinerator in the middle of town. Are you people crazy? Texas is a net exporter of electric power so this plant IS NOT NEEDED. Just to get a few hundred jobs?

Yes, calling it a "coal" burning is way too kind. It will burn all the nasty stuff that has to be taken out of gasoline (mercury, lead, etc). And since they don't want to employ people and technology to capture and sell these things like the plant north of here, it will spew out over our city.

There seems to be some misunderstanding by some of the commenters, this is not a coal plant. It is using Petroleum Coke a waste byproduct of Gasoline production from oil. This type of power plant is more cost effective than any renewable and will help us become more energy independent.

What could be wrong with locating a toxic waste incinerator unusually close to a human population? We don't need to know about the health risks or potential economic costs to taxpayers, when this deal is bringing 80 jobs (being sarcastic)

L. Brandon: You assume this, or any coal plant, is needed in the first place. Energy use in most places across the country has leveled off. Those that have increasing energy needs are mostly in need of peak energy supply - not "baseload" sources of power such as Las Brisas. Also, your assumption that the alternatives are not yet viable or cost prohibitive are incorrect, especially when you take into account the vast external costs of coal power. You do not need Las Brisas, not now, not ever.

Danielle D. and KBSN have valid points. New and emerging energy technologies are needed. My son Leroy who will graduate from Texas A&M Kingsville with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 2010 also agrees. He and I both contend, however, that better technologies and solutions either don't yet exist or are cost prohibitive. Las Brisas is the answer to our community's needs right now because it may take years before emerging technologies are viable alternatives. We need Las Brisas now.

Mr. Brandon, while I respect your approach to looking at the issue with intelligence and logic, I must remind you and the other people of CC that fossil fuel run plants are not a solution but rather a stagnant substitute to better options. Americans should be trying to perfect the use of fusion as a power source instead of putting money into plants that we know provide a fraction of the power fusion could and a lot more pollution. Boost the economy by giving scientist jobs so that these problems

What is so infuriating is that the technology is available to have better scrubbers that will reduce the air polution considerably but Las Brisas has opted for the lesser ones. If they pass TCEQ air quality tests then maybe TCEQ needs to raise their standards. Don't be bought out by the promise of all the tax money it will bring in.

No, Againer, I don't consider Industry and Technology to be the enemy or the "wolf" as you put it. I deal in fact, not scare tactics. Industry must comply with environmental regulations and there are regulatory agencies that ensure compliance. Las Brisas represents new jobs, $400 million in increased tax revenue, and $900 million in local spending. In this economic environment we desperately need these things. People "crying wolf" will transport us back into the stone age.

I do not know enough about the Las Brisas project to make a fair assessment at this time. I do however, have a working proficiency with the English language and a high school level writing ability. The author of this article has neither of the aforementioned tools. The structure of the final sentence is third-grade level at best. Editors: proofread your copy.

These protestors are what Berney Seal use to call the "Againers": those who are "against" every project that might benefit Corpus Christi, Texas. Las Brisas has addressed air quality questions. The City Council, Nueces County Commisioners Court, and Port of Corpus Christi support the project. The CCISD will enjoy a virtual windfall in new tax revenues. Go to http://www.lasbrisasenergy.com/faq.html for further factual information. Don't allow these "Againers" to stop this.

If a city diminishes it's quality of life, then it sickens and dies. Las Brisas plant will not only pollute Corpus, It will spread it's poison to the much greater community. We will never be able to restore the lost air quality or our citizen's health after it is gone. Shame on all the people who turn their head and pretend that the children will not be harmed.
