We are learning more  about both the driver and the victim of a wrong way traffic accident on the I-37 Access Road Wednesday.  Police suspect the wrong way driver, a 25 year old, was under the influence of drugs when he crested a hill and collided head on with another vehicle killing the other driver instantly.

The victim of this accident was a well known businessman in this community.  47 year old Woody Sanderfer is survived by his wife, three grown children, and 9 grand-children.  His sudden loss is having a dramatic and tragic affect on his family.  They elected a family spokesperson, and a longtime friend of Woody's, Danny Simmons to speak on their behalf.

"I don't know anyone who didn't like him," said Simmons.  " He had a heart of gold. He would do anything for any of his friends"

The accident happened Wednesday on the Access Road of I-37 near Magee.  Police suspect, 25 year old Steven Pena, was driving under the influence of heroin when he went the wrong way on the Access Road in his pickup.

Police say a witness claims Pena would go the wrong way on the Access Road all the time using it as a short cut.

Three news investigated today and learned through public records that pena didn't have a valid driver's license, and two hours prior to the fatal wreck, pena was stopped by police for going 15 miles an hour over the speed limit.  He was given two citations.

"At that point he did not have any outward signs of being under the influence." said Corpus Christi Police Captain Michael McKinney.

Pena reportedly underwent surgery on Thursday for a broken ankle.  He is under guard held for Manslaughter.  But, police  say when a positive blood test returns the charge could change to Intoxication Manslaughter.

I actually served a tour in iraq with steven pena. He wasn't quite right before the tour. He was under the influence of pills before we even deployed. There were many instances overseas where he was hospitalized because of his addiction .. even times where his weapon was taken away and he was placed under guarded supervision. It a shame what happened to this young man over a 5 year period of time, but I can't say that im surprised to hear about it

Race? This has nothing to do with race. Hispanic, Black, White has nothing to do with this. This drugged up man was allowed to drive away earlier without a drivers license. Hello!! The police will pull you over and issue you a citation but, they didn't notice that this man was on drugs? No Licence! Speeding! yet he was allowed to drive off and kill this poor man who was just driving. It's sad! My condolences to that poor family who lost that wonderful soul!

From what we have read, Woody Sanderfer was a wonderful, loving and caring person. I think he would be saddened to see some of the comments that have been posted here. You never know when you will be in the same position as one of these families. Please continue to pray for all involved. Thank you.

He was probably let go because the jails are over crowded. And it was reported that certain crimes would receive tickets instead of going to jail. Now they have to make room for him when he recovers from his little ankle injury for Manslaughter. I guess thats what we can expect when they are not arrest the first time, A WORST CRIME, AN INNCOCENT DEATH! That is what our county Sheriff wants till they can over come this jail over crowding.

. Certainly, he is not perfect; but who of us is? He is a person with a big loving heart who would give the shirt off his back for anyone. He loves God, his family, and his country. In fact, he fought for this country. And, he was also a victim of circumstance in other ways. He will never be able to live with this tragedy. Please understand that there are real faces and hearts behind the scenes. We ask for your continued prayers for the Sanderfer family,

I am a family member of the truck driver. First and foremost, our family extends our deepest condolences to Mr. Sanderfer’s family and friends. Our hearts and prayers are with you. Your pain and loss is immeasurable. We are devastated that a life was lost, and are grieving this terrible tragedy for two families. Unfortunately, we also know the pain of losing loved ones too soon. Our loved one is not a monster who set out on a mission to kill an innocent person.

It is very easy for armchair quarterbacks to pass judgement on the same public servants they call when they are in distress. The fact of the matter is when we are safe at home they are risking their lives dealing with thugs, convicts, crazies and drug addicts. The officers are human beings risking everything daily and in my opinion that alone should be commended. This was a tragic loss and the entire blame should be with the person that was under the influence and behind the wheel.

why would anyone mention his race, we see issues like this happen all over town by people of all races. People, it is time to look at the issue not the race. I am surprised that he was able to be released without having a license, most likely no insurance. If the officer would of impounded his car and have him checked due to his prior driving history Mr.Sanderfer would be with us today. God Bless his family especially during this hard time.

The same person that killed Mr. Sanderfer, ran into a parked car 6 or 7 years ago on the street where I live. He was under the influence then and fled the scene. The police caught him when he drove back by the car he had ran into an hour before. He was wasted, but not arrested. I'm sadden to hear the police let him go again, after being stopped without a license 2 hrs before the fatal accident. I didn't realize people were allowed to continue to drive if their license was revoked.

so when does the driving under the influence stop? When the courts stop passing out light sentences for DWI's that's when. Why did he keep on driving after being stopped and had a suspended license. Why are we the public at the mercy of drivers such as this. We the public should stand up and stop this. I talk from personal experience my brother was killed 10 years ago by a drunk driver. My condolences to the family.
