Teachers across the state are gathered in Corpus Christi this week to learn new ways to help their autistic students. It's the annual state conference on autism being held this weekend at the American Bank Center.

From Dallas to Flour Bluff, teachers traveled to learn more about this puzzling disease known as autism. As many as 16,000 individuals signed up for the 18th annual three-day Texas Autism conference.

With one percent of the population of children in the U.S. suffering from autism. The Texas Education Agency felt the need to put on such an event this year.

From teachers, to administrators to parents, all were anxious to learn more about the puzzling disease. Special guest speakers, classroom lectures and even special books for sale , all are the reason why, teachers, like Renee White, signed up for this conference:

"To stay up to date with all of the new activities new data that is out there to make sure that i bring it into the classroom and that I'm giving my students every opportunity to learn," said White, a Flour Bluff teacher.

The event is sponsored by the Coastal Bend's Education Service Center, Region 2. It runs through Saturday at the American Bank Center.

Parents of autistic children actually know more about it.. because we work with our child everyday! Teachers need that education continuously to catch up to what the parent has already learned. What parents need is help in teaching these kids to manuever around to learn. Teachers have to start from the basics... because they can't even tell you the signs to look out for in autistic children. Parents are already ahead of the game. Maybe teachers should listen to the parents more often!

Back to froggy @ 11:07! Remind you.. that I have an autistic child! I have spent the hours trying to work with many teachers in explaining them how an autistic child learns and sees everything in this world differently. Unless you have an autistic child, you have no clue or have the ability to make a comment on this! Too many teachers are not educated in autism. So, don't tell me or anyone else to shut up! We struggle to get teachers to actually want to help our kids!

Oh shut up and get over yourself, just because your limited experience and small bubble world may have made you think like that doesnt meant it's true with every teacher. Besides isnt that what conferences like this one are for? TO help teachers by educating them and creating an awareness? Get-it-right got it right though. Come on KIII, dont be ignorant. The conference is for parents, therapists, and clinicians as well. Please dont be as scope minded as Anonymous @9:32.

Autism is a DISABILITY not a Disease. That is a disgrace to be calling this disability otherwise. Teachers have no clue how to define autism or circle their learning techniques into the minds of an autistic child!

Autism isn't any more of a disease than mental retardation, autustic just sounds better.

Duh, KIII, it's not just teachers. It's parents, occupational therapists, diagnositicans, psychologists, etc. as well as teachers.

Natural Gas

Should the city of Corpus Christi privatize its natural gas system or keep it under city ownership?

  • Yes. Sell it and let private business run it.
  • No. Keep it as a city department.
  • I don't know.
