Come rain or shine, Corpus Christi's lone red light camera has been operational since late April, now 2 more are coming on line, and should be up and running by tonight.
A red light pointing southbound will be added to the intersection of Everhart and Holly. There's already one there monitoring northbound traffic. Another red light camera will go in, and capture video and photographic evidence at the intersection of Greenwood and Gollihar.
"There's been 357 red light violations caught on film, and actually a kind of side note of the 357 there's only been 3 that were caught by the police," says Corpus Christi Police Captain J. Vesely. "One of the complaints, I always here is whenever the light turns green don't pull out, you've got to make sure people aren't running red lights, and if this helps the problem, and it seems to be helping, we're all for it, safer streets are safer streets and that's ultimately what our goal is."
Accidents have been recorded on the camera, along with an incident of drag racing. Cameras at ocean drive at Doddridge Street and Airline Road at McArdle road are scheduled to be up and running July 12Th. The ultimate goal to get 50 cameras stationed through out the city.
