First a Fence around the Coliseum, Next It's Chewed and Crunched into Rubble

It's a sign that things are about to change soon on the land now occupied by Memorial Coliseum. Now there's a chain link fence  surrounding the structure.

The demolition company hired by the city is in the initial stages of doing it's job: demolishing the building, now a symbol to many that is about the old days of Corpus Christi, home to concerts, like the one where Elvis performed, to countless circuses.

There's opposition to the Memorial Coliseum coming down, with arguments that the Coliseum is on a list of endangered historic places. But the demolition continues as planned.

The contractor secured the area today in order to make it a safe environment when crews begin to bring in equipment.  They'll begin on Monday by removing asbestos from inside. The company was hired by the city last month at a cost of nearly $600,000.

Today we spoke with the project manager who says the Coliseum is too small to perform any type of implosion. Instead, large machines will be brought in to literally chew up the building. Project Manager, Vernon Carr told Kiii News today, "This is normal size for us, average doesn't compare to right now. We are doing Texas Stadium. the  Dallas Cowboy stadium which we are imploding on April 11Th. That's quite a difference in size. This is not something we would consider for an implosion.  We'll just bring it down."

The manager says much of debris will be recycled. Once the job is done here, the company will be putting down grass, and a sprinkler system.

The time to fix it has long passed, sorry guys. They could have done so years ago and you see how well they maintained the building in the first place; I for one would not want to pay to have a half done job done to bring it back for 3 years before it falls apart again. This is NOT a fitting memorial for our veterans first of all and it's pathetic that people need a worn out building to remember their memories. Everyone who's talking about memories anyway, tell us when the last time was you actually went inside? People are complaining that pieces of the roof are flying into the street! Tear the junk down and build something better for our veterans as well as something that will bring money and jobs into CC!

In its worst days downtown San Antonio was never the SEWER that Corpus is. Corpus will never improve as long as it tolerates the scum that commits the crime here.

Like so many things in Corpus everywhere you look it's junky. Stop saying "NO" to all the builders out there and do something to beautify all city. Downtown S.A had a similar problem but they fixed it with the River center mall and everything else fell into place.

It is an eyesore, but why? Because the city never maintained it. It was built and dedicated for the war heroes and like many things in this country no money was spent to maintain it. Now let me ask you this- just because it's tore down do you think the junkies that used it will just disappear? Nope, they'll just be forced to another area, maybe your back yard or next to a school. The bigger picture needs to be looked at here!

I met RUSH,Sly Stone,Roberto Duran,Frankie Warren,Evander Holyfield and many other performers when I did contract work there. However the person who sticks out in my mind was Jamie Gonzalez, the building manager. He was the one who had to deal with vain performers, police, complaints of all kinds, drunks, electrical problems,no shows, accidents, you name it He was there. So wherever you are you did a great job.The place is almost sacred BUT ITS GOT TO GO!

Does not matter what this building was for or why it was built. Its a monument and reflection of what Corpus is ! A run down has been of a town with no real future other than a sanctuary city for crime. Get rid of it and the other slum areas in the town.

I LOVE MY CORPUS CHRISTI! said on Wednesday, Mar 10 at 9:26 AM

Sorry, but the Coliseum was an eyesore and embarressment already, I wish they'd make a monument area for our vets and then next to it make an indoor/outdoor skating area w/a Ferris wheel and rides, kind of like a Kemah Theme. I love my beautiful city, no matter what!

I fought in Toughman to a sold out venue there. Although I'm all for progression, I'm afraid Corpus is just tearing down history instead of preserving it as it should be. There are many useful options for the arena, but initiative hasnt EVER been a strong suit with this council. Maybe I'll save a brick as a keepsake...

Sometimes you just need to get it done. Its been a vancant area for about a decade, used by homeless and addicts. It is bringing in zero dollars. Build something the city can be proud of, and that families can use.

To have an asset like the Coliseum and not be able to make any money off of it or have it maintained in high esteem : you have to be an idiot.

I am a veteran and I support tearing down the Coliseum. I say its about time!!! I fought proudly for my country to grow and prosper, not to be held back by people who want to hold on to the old way of doing things. If you want to really honor veterans develop a place that everyone in Corpus will love to visit and take their families and dedicate it to the honor of the veterans. No one wants to see an old building rotting away just because its in the name of veterans. To really honor veterans would be to give them a truly nice place to be remembered and not call a place that has divided the city our place for honoring vets.

Natural Gas

Should the city of Corpus Christi privatize its natural gas system or keep it under city ownership?

  • Yes. Sell it and let private business run it.
  • No. Keep it as a city department.
  • I don't know.
