CORPUS CHRISTI--Twelve pit bulls found dead at this man's home and tonight he's speaking out. The man is under investigation for animal cruelty, and he said he did nothing wrong, actually trying to rescue the dogs.
"It's that they were bad animals found on the street and I tried to save them and it just couldn't happen for all of them," said the man whose under investigation.
The man didn't want to show his face or give out his full name, but he said he was simply trying to rescue stray dogs and give them a home.
"It has nothing to do with neglect or nothing like that," the man who lives on Carroll Lane said.
After neighbors reported a stench coming from the man's home, animal control officers checked it out and what they found was twelve dead pit bulls. Two of them were still chained up, while ten others were scattered in the backyard.
Only one dog was found alive. She's is now in the care of Animal Control and is in good health.
The man emphasizing that he was just trying to rescue strays. He said most of the dogs were already sick and in poor health. He was just trying to rehabilitate them.
"I had shelter food water for all of them, but I put them in the back and had a small time to take care of them," the man said. "I tried to use everything I had as far as time and effort and everything like that to take care of the dogs, but a lot of them were just too sick to make it."
"We have veterinarian that did get to examine the remains of the dogs," said Richard Gould, a Corpus Christi Animal Control Officer. "The two dogs that were on top of the ground on chains.he was able to establish were underweight at the time of death."
Animal Control officers said the pit bulls weren't involved with dog fighting. The dog owner said he would never do that.
The dog owner is facing eight charges of improper disposal of animal remains. He could possibly face animal cruelty charges as well and that investigation is on-going.
