CORPUS CHRISTI--Twelve pit bulls found dead at this man's home and tonight he's speaking out. The man is under investigation for animal cruelty, and he said he did nothing wrong, actually trying to rescue the dogs.

"It's that they were bad animals found on the street and I tried to save them and it just couldn't happen for all of them," said the man whose under investigation.

The man didn't want to show his face or give out his full name, but he said he was simply trying to rescue stray dogs and give them a home.

"It has nothing to do with neglect or nothing like that," the man who lives on Carroll Lane said.

After neighbors reported a stench coming from the man's home, animal control officers checked it out and what they found was twelve dead pit bulls. Two of them were still chained up, while ten others were scattered in the backyard.

Only one dog was found alive. She's is now in the care of Animal Control and is in good health.

The man emphasizing that he was just trying to rescue strays. He said most of the dogs were already sick and in poor health. He was just trying to rehabilitate them.

"I had shelter food water for all of them, but I put them in the back and had a small time to take care of them," the man said. "I tried to use everything I had as far as time and effort and everything like that to take care of the dogs, but a lot of them were just too sick to make it."

"We have veterinarian that did get to examine the remains of the dogs," said Richard Gould, a Corpus Christi Animal Control Officer. "The two dogs that were on top of the ground on chains.he was able to establish were underweight at the time of death."

Animal Control officers said the pit bulls weren't involved with dog fighting. The dog owner said he would never do that.

The dog owner is facing eight charges of improper disposal of animal remains. He could possibly face animal cruelty charges as well and that investigation is on-going.

This is a case and point for the "licensing fee" argument. Why isn't this man going to be fined X amount of dollars for each dead dog??? Please, anyone who believes he was trying to save the dogs needs to have an idiot fee applied.

there would be no bitten children if there were responsible owners..this situation is another good example why pitbulls have bad reps..what if it were 12 german shepards or spaniels, would it make the situation any different? spaniels, shepards, labs, hounds, toy breeds etc...ALL will bite if not watched or properly cared for!!so to say pitbulls are bad is bull..if they are bad and should be banned because of stupid ownership, then the WHOLE DOG WORLD should be eliminated, because the all will "BITE, ATTACK,MAUL,etc

I dont undrestand, if he couldn't take care of the dogs and didn't want to call animal control, why weren't there signs up around the neighbor hood "dogs to good home" and he could have found some one who was able to care for at least some of the dogs or maybe all of them

Why does KIII defend people it shouldn't defend. If this man cared he would have taken the dogs to the animal shelter or call the city to pick up the strays instead of letting them suffer and die. Manuel De La Rosa you let the man hide behind you. If he didn't do anything wrong why is he hiding his face? This is why I don't watch you guys.

I work at a Vet Hospital. It is not the Pitbulls that are the problem; it are the Owners. This man should not have taken in these animals if he could not have provided Vet care or the proper shelter and care of these animals. As it was said, he "had a small time to take care of them". Animal control would of been far better for them than to die the way they did.

pitbulls are some of the best animals that you can own, "if" you are an aware and responsible owner you should have no mauling or bite incodents. I have had pitbulls for over ten years and i have had no people biting problems..Two important thing that these irresponsible pitbull owners forget "OBEDIENCE"training, and having more dogs than you can handle..pitbulls need lots of time to play and learn. If you have a screwed up unorganized kennel with no direction how do you expect to care for such animals....

Noticed the yard was neglected also. Earmarks of a tall tale and tall weeds.

These animals should be outlawed within city limits.

I have had pit bulls that are gentle, kind and wonderful pets. A person that would chain a dog and let them starve to death should be filed on and punished severly. A grandmothers comment.

Good job at saving them, if all but one are dead! Why anyone would want to own a pitbull is beyond me; I can only assume a mental deficiency. I have seen data collected by a veterinary chain, that spanned over 12 years, that recorded dog on dog injuries. I'm afraid pitbulls accounted in almost 80% of those! I think most veterinarian clinics would back this figure up...But stupid people keep breeding them, and the ignorant keep buying them. Every time you see a news story about the latest pitbull mauling, it;s always the same dumb quote: " but he's always been so sweet!" Meanwhile, the victim is getting the flesh reattached to their bodies.

Once this guy took in the dogs off the streets, he then had an obligation to have the dogs treated at a Vet. Also, he stole peoples dogs. Did he try to find the owners. And once the dogs were to maybe get better, what was his plan with them. I don't believe the guys story at all.

Let's hope the authorities aren't dumb enough to fall for that..Come on..if he was trying to help them, he wouldn't have so many dead animals. And I've never had an animal that I was trying to help, let alone two, starve to death on a chain and then leave them there. And repeating, don't make such quick judements just because they are pit bulls. My family's chihuahuas bite more people than all of the big dogs I've ever owned or come across in my life.

I don't doubt this man had good intentions, but it sounds like the guy is ignorant, and probably too poor to handle the responsibility of caring for a dozen stray dogs. Get a clue! These animals were probably worse off after having been "taken in" by this idiot.

Natural Gas

Should the city of Corpus Christi privatize its natural gas system or keep it under city ownership?

  • Yes. Sell it and let private business run it.
  • No. Keep it as a city department.
  • I don't know.
