CORPUS CHRISTI - -

Tommie Koehn, 90, was a fixture of the senior community in Corpus Christi for more than 25 years before she was brutally murdered. Sonia Garza, a friend and Senior Center Supervisor said, "She will be missed." Koehn began working for the Meals on Wheels Program back in the eighties and retired from volunteering in mid-nineties signing up for center activities. In fact, last Thursday, she had lunch with friends at the Garden Senior Center. This only days before she was found murdered. Elsa Munoz, Superintendent of Senior Community Services and a friend of the victim's for more than 25 years said, "Some of the individuals have decided not to return to the center until they are able to come to grips with it. There's some proactive measures we are trying to take in terms of scheduling some experts to come in and provide grief counseling." Koehn's body was found in her home Monday night. She died after she was hit in the head with tremendous force. She lived alone, was never married, and had no children. She spent much of her time socializing with other seniors. Those who knew her best say despite her age Tommie was very independent, loved life and that she will be greatly missed.  Munoz said, "She had an interesting sense of humor... you had to get to know her for awhile before you could figure out if she was serious or if she was joking." Garza added she was in good health and overall was a happy person, "She was a very jovial happy, loved to laugh. Interacted well with all of the members, they loved her to death. She's gonna be very missed." So far, no one has been charged with Koehn's murder. Though as three news news first reported, Carlos Garza, 40, was arrested for using Koehn's credit card. In light of this incident, Senior Community Services are working to get a police officer to come in to discuss safety with the seniors.

At around the time of this murder,a man broke into another elderly ladies washroom and stole a change of clothes. The police were called and they took a report but did not take the clothes the man left behind. How do we know these incidents are not related?

Corpus Christi City Budget

Corpus Christi city revenues aren't keeping up with the budget. What's the city to do? Cut expenses, raise taxes?

  • Small cuts in services and small tax rate hikes.
  • Drastic cuts in city services, no tax increases.
  • Reduce city employee salaries and benefits
  • Reduce all city services including pay cuts, and raise taxes
