Alice man helps Salvation Army

The Salvation houses up to 141 people on nights temperatures drop into the 50 degrees.

ALICE (KIII NEWS) - A mission for one man out of Alice for the past four years was helping hundreds of people in during the winter season, with temperatures dipping into the 20's this week donations to the Salvation Army are going a long way.

Many like Juan Lopez who do not have a place to call home have to brace the cold temperatures during the day with just the clothes on their back.

"Its cold and I don't know where to go, so I came here," Lopez said.

But on a night like Tuesday with temperatures dipping into the 30's, Lopez is glad he can spend the night off the streets and here at the Salvation Army.

"Every time I become homeless I come here," Lopez said. "There's no other place I can go to that's better than this."

But Lopez is not getting a full nights rest, he and 30 other men are receiving a complete winter outfit: thermal undergarments, sweatpants, hoodies, socks, gloves, and shoes.

"It's cold out there, and I can't really afford much," Lopez said.

It is all thanks to Nick Garcia and his team out of Alice, who have made it a yearly event.

"Mental high that's unbelievable because you put a smile on someone's face that didn't have one," Garcia said. "One of the men said he hadn't had a Christmas present in 10 years."

"It's easy for us to just forget about these basic necessities," said Captain Patrick Gesner.

The Salvation houses up to 141 people on nights temperatures drop into the 50 degrees. Over the past few days, the need for the shelter has gone up.

"For last two nights we've been taking  30 to 40 additional people," Gesner said.

"Appreciate everything they do," Lopez said.

Making all the hearts happy makes Garcia's donation all worth it.
