CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - During their visit to areas of the Coastal Bend that were hit hard by Hurricane Harvey, First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence stopped at Charlie Marshall Elementary School in Aransas Pass.

The school was one of many that were affected by the storm.

The motorcade arrived to the school in grand fashion and was greeted by a handful of eager community members trying to get a glimpse of the First Lady.

"It let's me know that, as much as we think we are forgotten, we are not forgotten," Aransas Pass resident Chelsea Olson said. "They know there are families here that need the help still."

Once inside, the faculty and students got to interact with Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Pence.

One of the classes the two visited was a fourth-grade writing class. They shook hands with the students and even sat at their desks with them to take part in their lessons.

Fourth-grader Johnny Mendez used what he learned in class to teach Mrs. Trump about the use of commas -- something he was pretty excited about.

"Mrs. Trump said I taught her something," Mendez said. "I was going to cry happy tears. Got to contain myself."

Their visit was a welcome sight for many at the school, including fourth-grade teacher Haley Lucas.

Out of the five campuses in the Aransas Pass Independent School District, Charlie Marshall Elementary School was the least damaged. As a result, the school's enrollment doubled, taking on sixth and seventh graders following the storm -- an extra 215 students.

Wednesday's visit showcased the problems many areas are still dealing with.

"Hurricane Harvey is long gone, but we're still dealing with a lot of the challenges, with schools not being open," Charlie Marshall Principal Jeremy Saegert said. "Their response is, 'That is why we are coming to visit. To bring you back into the spotlight.'"
