Aransas Pass suspends zoning change to allow temporary housing

The most prominent issue according to Comeaux is losing residents and renters.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Aransas Pass City Council suspended zoning regulations Monday night which would allow FEMA to set up temporary housing until April 30, 2019.  Monday's resolution will now allow temporary housing on private residential areas including floodplains.

"We wanted it in place. We want people to have somewhere to be on Christmas," said Aransas Pass City Planner Katherine Comeaux.

The City Council said they are not receiving valuable information from FEMA and the only update they have received is the housing from individual residents who have brought in their own RV's or contractors.

"Whenever they give us the County numbers we have no idea how many people within our city are going to be recipients of this temporary housing program," Comeaux said.

With limited communication, it is hard for the city to move forward.

"People who have had to wait three months are now having to wait for us to access or to put in infrastructure and we are not sure who is funding at," Comeaux said.

The most prominent issue according to Comeaux is losing residents and renters.

"We want people here, and we want to DPO everything that's within the city's power to accommodate that," Comeaux said.

Residents at the meeting said with temporary homes will come sanitation and maintenance issues.

"People are very concerned that if we allow them now that they are going to be here forever," Comeaux said.

The City of Aransas Pass is in the process of coming up with a plan to address how housing will be managed, but their current focus is keeping residents.
