CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - It's not just a hobby. It's a way of life.

Corpus Christi artist Jimmy Pena has been painting for as long as he can remember, and while he's utilized all sorts of media, for the last year he has used a brush and paint.

He's actually set his sights on one specific goal -- to paint 100 portraits of 100 people in one year.

His subjects have been as varied as the colors on his styrofoam pallet. Each likeness is  different, each unique, and each comes from deep within Pena's imagination.

"I've been making art most of my life and I've always, one of the problems that I've had making art, I've tried harder and harder every time to make it look more realistic and more realistic and it was getting to the the point where it was not fun anymore making art," Pena said.

So Pena came up with a unique idea.  He came up with a new project he calls an exercise to help him develop his talent and grow.

"For me to loosen up and not worry about rendering like I used to," Pena said. "I used to try to get the image of the person to be exact, everything had to be exact, and it was driving me crazy and it just wasn't fun anymore."

Now that has all changed and it's fun again.

"It's loose, free and quick," Pena said.

His studio is shared by many other South Texas artists, perched high atop the old Kress building downtown, now home to the K-Space art gallery.

While Pena does have an Instagram account where you can see his work, art lovers will be able to see his entire 100-painting collection during Art Walk on the first Friday in July.

"I hope everyone comes to the show in July downstairs in the K-Space Contemporary Gallery," Pena said.
