CCISD Superintendent talks need for replacement school

There is no estimated timeline when individuals could see the new Carroll High School.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Corpus Christi Independent School District is in discussion to replace the old Carroll High School located off of Weber Road with a brand new school.

The school board approved an action that would reimburse the district for the purchase of land in a new location. The reimbursement would come from a future bond election for the new school.

Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez said the district is not rushing through the process but does want to be proactive because of concerns over land available to build on. The new school would have to be built within the current Carroll boundaries.

Dr. Hernandez said they are looking at different locations such as the Saratoga area.

"This is our next step, trying to get out in front of it and not have the land swapped out from under us with all the shopping plazas coming about," Dr. Hernandez said.

In the past board members looked into a new building for Carroll High School but that lead to the addition of Veterans Memorial High School which opened in 2015.

Dr. Hernanedez expressed that the age of the campus and growth of Carroll High School was the need for a new school.

"We at one point had two high schools that reached 2600 and 2400, that is a large high school, so building Veterans has helped ease the overcrowding.  At the same time we continue to plan out our District, we can balance those numbers, and have better enrollment and not be so crowded," Dr. Hernandez said.

There is no estimated timeline when individuals could see the new Carroll High School.
