CCPD breaks down factors at play in 2017 traffic fatalities

A pedestrian fatality Monday morning marks the 38th traffic fatality in Corpus Christi this year, and the 12th involving a pedestrian.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - A pedestrian fatality Monday morning marks the 38th traffic fatality in Corpus Christi this year, and the 12th involving a pedestrian.

"And the year is not over with," said Lt. Chris Hooper of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Police said they are doing all they can to keep citizens safe, but there is a lot that we are doing wrong on the road.

Hooper said to draw a conclusion about the number of deaths would be wrong because every one of them represents a human life and an individual incident.

"And so what we try to do, tragically, is analyze every single one of these to see if there's a trend or to see if there is something that we as public safety could be doing better," Hooper said.

Police aren't finding one single underlying element attributed to all of this year's fatalities. Instead, police said there are several factors.

"The vast majority of them, it's about speed, it's about impaired driving, or it's about irresponsible behavior on the pedestrian's part," Hooper said.

When it comes to pedestrians, some choose not to walk on crosswalks, or they wear dark clothing at night. Some are even under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

When it comes to speed, police said those motorists fail to see the dangers, especially when it comes to motorcyclists.

"Some of the numbers that are up this year in the motorcycle deaths, speed was a factor almost to the point of being suicidal on a motorcycle," Hooper said.

When it comes to distracted driving, it's just plain irresponsibility.

"We're doing everything that we can on the enforcement end of the deal," Hooper said. "We've written thousands of citations in an effort to change the behavior, and we do not see the results that we'd like to see."

With four weeks left in the year to go, here are the numbers on traffic fatalities in Corpus Christi this year:

  • 38 traffic fatalities total
  • 12 involving pedestrians
  • 5 involving motorcycles
  • 1 involving a bicycle
  • 4 caused by a hit-and-run
