CCPD stepping up patrols for holiday shopping season

Corpus Christi police announced Tuesday their annual Holiday Initiative Against Crime.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Corpus Christi police announced Tuesday their annual Holiday Initiative Against Crime.

Officers will target high-traffic shopping areas looking for criminals in an effort to prevent crime over the holiday shopping season.

Shoppers said they are ready as well.

"I always make sure to lock my vehicle and I always take my purse with me," Alyssa Zarate said.

Some who spoke to 3News Tuesday said they were glad to hear that police would be out in force with their Holiday Initiative, which will run through Dec. 24.

Police said they will step up patrols and increase surveillance in four major shopping centers around the city, including several major store parking lots.

They have also set up their new Skywatch observation tower in front of La Palmera Mall to help keep an eye on shoppers and those who may want to steal from their vehicles.

And it's not just theft police are looking out for -- they've also stepped up their DWI patrols and traffic safety.

"Plan ahead," CCPD Capt. Russell Sherman said. "Plan for some extra time so you're not trying to speed and get where you're going on time."

Officers also plan to have undercover vehicles to watch for crime and bad driving.

Some shoppers aim to protect themselves from crime as well, including one who told 3News she was once the victim of a mugger. She said she keeps a gun in her console.

Shoppers agreed on many things. Don't shop alone; park in well-lit areas; and be aware of your surroundings.
