CCPD warns Coastal Bend residents of credit card skimmers

The Corpus Christi Police Department warned the public Tuesday about the number of skimming devices found in the Coastal Bend.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - The Corpus Christi Police Department warned the public Tuesday about the number of skimming devices found in the Coastal Bend.

"What is a skimming device? Skimming devices are used by criminals to capture data from the magnetic strips on the back of credit cards," Lt. Micheal Pena said in a video posted by the CCPD Thursday.

According to Lt. Pena, there were over 700 cases of credit card abuse and 13 documented cases of skimming devices found in Corpus Christi. Skimming devices are usually placed over card readers on ATM's and gas stations.

Police said people should pay with cash, use a prepaid card or even pay inside to avoid falling victim to a credit card skimmer.
