Christus Spohn Shoreline unveiled renovation suites

With the three operating rooms opening next week, that brings to 18 the number of operating rooms at this hospital. And that makes it the largest such hospital south of San Antonio.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Christus Spohn Shoreline hospital unveiled three new surgical suites Friday designed for heart operations.

Doctors in the area say they're thrilled to have this level of technology to use on this kind of surgery.

Dr. Sorin Pusca, a cardiovascular thoracic surgeon, said, "You need more technology to be able to scale down the incision, the invasiveness that you need to use to perform the same operation. So essentially it allows an easier patient recovery, a faster patient recovery."

Dr. Pusca says that applies to elderly who may not be healthy enough for such operations or young people who need to get back to their lives quickly.

Dr. Sergio Tavares, another cardiovascular thoracic surgeon, says, "More monitoring. The ability to do more sophisticated and advanced cardiovascular procedures and just facilitates our work."

The facility also got a sneak peek from a group of Calallen High School seniors considering a career in the medical field.

At the cost of nine million total, each of the three operating rooms is 600 square feet and part of the renovation and consolidation project of memorial and shoreline facilities.

Steven Alford, with Spohn Hospitals "It's an unprecedented 325 million dollar construction project made possible by the investment from Christus Health, our parent company. It's their largest investment ever in any region and of course about 50 million in local philanthropy so no tax dollars required."
