Coastal Bend homeless shelters prepare for cold front

The City's most prominent shelters are always open to accept more donations of any kind, but for the time being, they are prepared for the next few days.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Coastal Bend homeless shelters spent Tuesday preparing for the next 48 hours as a cold front began making its pass through Corpus Christi.

"Everything is running smooth as cream," said Carole Murphrey, a representative from the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission.

"Good thing our heaters run," Salvation Army Captain Patrick T. Gesner said. "Everything is working and functional."

"We have plenty of jackets and blankets," said Sister Rose of the Mother Teresa Shelter.

The City's most prominent shelters are always open to accept more donations of any kind, but for the time being, they are prepared for the next few days.

"After going through the hurricane with 271 people, this is going to be a piece of cake, and what's good about it is that a lot of the folks who are the from the street that came in for the hurricane now know who we are and how we are," Murphrey said.

While shelter representatives said they have the mechanics down, they all have one similar concern.

"Every year it's a challenge because obviously we have limited space here in our shelter, as does any shelter here in Corpus," Gesner said. "But we open any available space that we can."

"We still have evacuees from Hurricane Harvey," Murphrey said.

All the shelters said they would not turn anyone away when the weather starts getting bad.

The shelters welcome items from individuals such as un-needed cold weather gear or non-perishable food items.

The Salvation Army will be operating its mobile canteen but are in need of volunteers to run it.
