Corpus Christi's AFT President detained during protest in Washington D.C.

"We're fighting for the freedoms of people, so sometimes things happen," Sanchez said. "But you know we're not afraid because basically, we're doing the right thing."

CORPUS CHRISTI - The president of the Corpus Christi chapter of the American Federation of Teachers was detained Tuesday while protesting alongside Dreamers in Washington D.C.

AFT President Nancy Vera said she was among the dozens of protesters speaking out against the Trump administration's attempts to remove DACA.

Vera shared her experience on Capitol Hill.

"I was detained by the Capitol Police," Vera said. "Sat on steps, chanting that DACA recipients weren't going anywhere."

After hearing the news of Vera's detainment, the members of AFT reacted.

"We're behind her because she's fighting for what we believe in, for these children," Theresa Sanchez said.

Vera was invited by Randi Weingarten, President of the National American Federation of Teachers, to take part in the protest against the rollbacks of DACA.

"Immigration students we have here, who are afraid they may be let go, back to where they came from Mexico," Vera said.

Vera left Washington D.C Tuesday morning and rallied outside of the Capital with Dreamers Wednesday for the clan Dream Act to become the law of the land.

"Our students they've come here since they were in Pre-k now graduated high school what a shame for them who have learned English," Vera said. "In ESL classes and now they are gonna graduate."

During the sit-in, Vera along with lawmakers and other AFT members were detained for three hours.

"The kids play by the rules, the government needs to play the rules as well," Vera said. "They should feel comfortable to be in the classroom and not be afraid they're going to be detained or taken."

Vera also received a citation which caused her to extend the visit in D.C., but her colleagues support her a hundred percent.

"We're fighting for the freedoms of people, so sometimes things happen," Sanchez said. "But you know we're not afraid because basically, we're doing the right thing."
