County Clerk speaks out about arrest connected to sister's death

Nueces County Clerk Kara Sands is speaking out about Tuesday's arrest of 22-year-old Dacota Deaver, three months after the death of her sister.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Nueces County Clerk Kara Sands is speaking out about Tuesday's arrest of 22-year-old Dacota Deaver, three months after the death of her sister.

Deaver is accused of being on his cell phone while operating the vehicle that struck and killed Sands' 44-year-old sister, Cecilia Stanford.

Sands was in the courtroom Wednesday as Deaver went before a judge for the first time since his arrest.

"Because of his reckless behavior, he killed my sister," Sands said.

Deaver received a $100,000 bond in court Wednesday.

"She was loud and fun. She would be doing this for me if it were for me," Sands said. "She loved us. Loved her friends. Loved life. I miss her."

Deaver was arrested Tuesday, three months following the fatal crash. He has been charged with manslaughter and criminal negligent homicide.

Police said it was back in October when Stanford was pushing her car after it broke down in Calallen. While doing so, an SUV slammed into her from behind. Stanford was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

Sands called Deaver's arrest "bittersweet," and thanked law enforcement for their work in the investigation.

"I just keep thinking about my sister," Sands said. "I'm so grateful to the Corpus Christi Police Department, the DA's office, Sheriffs Department."

Sands vows to be in the courtroom for each of Deaver's hearings, and said while he has a right to a fair trial, she is looking for justice.

"You can't just be on your phone, drive and not pay attention," Sands said. "He took a life. Use this as an example. Not in Nueces County."

At last check, Deaver was still booked in the Nueces County Jail. If he makes bond, he will have to wear an ankle monitor.
