County officials break ground, announce name of new air terminal

Those who use the airport are glad to hear about the future improvements.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Politicians and individuals gathered Tuesday at the Nueces County Airport for the official naming and groundbreaking for their new airport terminal.

It will be called the County Judge Loyd Neal Air Terminal.

"I am very honored. This is really a nice deal. The unanimous vote of the court was important, but more importantly we're going to build a future here in the western part of the county," Neal said. "This new terminal building will solidify this airport for the future."

Neal was excited that the new terminal would be named after him.

"We're looking forward to this terminal being built hopefully within the next year before Judge Neal leaves office, and also to add to the airport to expand the runway in the future, so a lot of exciting prospects we have in Robstown," County Commissioner John Marez said.

Commissioner Mike Pusley said when he first got into the office in 2009, the county airport had been neglected. Pusley and the Commissioners Court decided to begin making repairs to the airport and with the help of the Texas Department of Transportation, which paid $1.2 million, the terminal was built.

"We are going to build a new terminal at the Robstown airport to help encourage people to come here and bring their airplanes here," Pusley said. "We're at capacity right now, but we're planning to build some additional hangars in the future, so we're really excited about that."

Those who use the airport are glad to hear about the future improvements.

"I would expect it to all be a positive. I'm really happy to see the investment in the community and the general aviation itself. I think it's a positive thing for all of it," crop duster Paul Bruton said.

During the big reveal of the terminal's name, officials also broke groun. They hope to have construction completed within 13 months.
