Day of Giving: Salvation Army

The holidays are right around the corner, and Salvation Army provides Christmas gifts to an estimated 12,00 children each year that otherwise wouldn't have presents for the holidays.

Due to Hurricane Harvey, the Salvation Army has been performing more duties than ever before.

"The programs we do and the numbers just keep going up and again for the community there's no greater of a time to give because there's no greater of a need for it," Captain Patrick T. Gesner said.

The holidays are right around the corner, and Salvation Army provides Christmas gifts to an estimated 12,00 children each year that otherwise wouldn't have presents for the holidays. This year there are even more children in need.

"We're looking for our angel tree program to actually have more children than ever before because of the hurricane," Gesner said.

The Salvation Army also feeds at least 12,000 people each month at their shelter alone, not including their canteen Christmas meals and food pantry ministries. The food pantry usually gives an average of 200 food boxes a month, but since the hurricane, the numbers have drastically increased.

"Now we're doing around 340 to 400 food boxes every month. For instance this Tuesday we did 115 food boxes just yesterday," Gesner said.

People without a home can even find shelter with the Salvation Army, but every night Salvation Army is at full capacity with hope to build a larger facility.

"Hopefully in the next year or two years, we will be getting into a new building and enlarge the number of families that we can house. We are the only family service center or shelter that does not separate parents from their children," Gesner said.

Salvation Army is the largest family service center in Corpus Christi.

"We need the support financially to meet all the people's needs that are coming to us this year," Gesner said.
