Doctors warn that Coastal Bend flu activity is reaching a peak

The Centers for Disease Control announced Wednesday that this year's flu activity has reached the highest level in nearly a decade.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - The Centers for Disease Control announced Wednesday that this year's flu activity has reached the highest level in nearly a decade.

In fact, 34 million Americans have already contracted the flu.

In the Coastal Bend, health officials said the number of flu cases have been truly staggering.

"Right now I think we are at the peak of this. We are seeing, we are testing more than 400 samples a week, and of those about 30-percent are coming back positive for influenza. So it is widespread. It is widespread here in Corpus Christi. It is affecting schools. It is affecting workplaces. It is severe," said Dr. Jaime Fergie of Driscoll Children's Hospital.

According to Fergie, the best defense against the flu is to get a flu shot, and of course, wash your hands frequently.
